News Reporter/Photographer
The Mountaineer Description The Mountaineer is looking for the right person to fill the position of reporter/photographer. We are looking for an exceptional individual who thrives on a combination of independence and teamwork as well as a thorough commitment to the best practices of community journalism. This is a three-person one editor newsroom. The beat will include court and police coverage, aboriginal and health issues, feature stories, community events and people. Rocky Mountain House is ideally situated about 45 minutes from Red Deer, and two hours from Calgary and Edmonton Respectively. We are an hour from the Kootenay Plains and less than two hours from the Banff Park Boundary. Working for the Mountaineer is perfect for someone who wants to work for an independently family owned paper passionate about community, family and positive working relationships. Qualifications Ideally, the successful candidate would have a year or two of weekly newspaper experience, but we are willing to work with and train a recent journalism school grad who understands and has a passion for community journalism and wants to work in the community press. Cross cultural experience, especially a good understanding of aboriginal issues and a willingness to cover and do feature stories about the Chiniki-Bighorn, Sunchild and O’Chiese Reserves will be an asset. The successful applicant will have strong hard news and feature writing skills as well as digital photography skills. He or she will need to have the creative versatility of coming up with feature story ideas and manage news coverage independently and by assignment with the editor. Good knowledge of CP style is essential. If you’re up to the challenge and want to work at a community newspaper in beautiful Central Alberta, please reply before June 1 with a resume, cover letter, 4-6 writing and photography samples.
